Balcony Grills
By ComfortB
We all know how great tasting food becomes when grilled as supposed to when fried. Well, back when I used to live in this tiny apartment out there in New York City, I remember always watching my home owner neighbors grilling away at their back porch. The aroma of the grilled meat (chicken, fish, hot-dogs), corn, plantains, and veggies all up in my nose.
If only I could do the same, set up out there, somewhere on the fire escape of my tiny one bedroom apartment and grill on. Not happening! At least, not back then.
You see, most apartment do not have balcony or porch room big enough for a classic barbecue grill. Even some popular portable barbecue grill can prove difficult to use in most apartment space. But today, it is possible, that is, if you own a balcony grill.
What's A Balcony Grill?
Balcony Grills are portable grills that makes it easy for apartment renters to set up and grill, or barbecue their food in the smallest back-porch space or on their balcony.
There are many portable grills out there that serve this purpose, one of them is the Cuisinart Griddle. One grill in particular that I came across recently really caught my attention both by the design, and the intended uses.
A Great Find!
Your first impression when you look at this product is, it's a planter. It looks like a terracotta pot, but concealed inside of it is a barbecue grill. I'm talking about the Black+Blum - Hot Pot Grill. This grill is divided up into two compartments, the top, and the bottom.
The top compartment is a watertight pot that's designed for growing the herbs that's normally use for seasoning the food cooked on the grill, while the bottom holds the coal for grilling. Between these two compartments is the stainless steel grill plate on which the food is grilled.
What's It Made Of?
- The interior is made from stainless steel.
- Includes stainless steel tongs - This doubles as both the tong to pick the food off the grill and also to lift the grill plate off the bottom compartment.
- Heat insulating ceramic coating - Keep the outside of ceramic cold to touch, and also to prevent accidental burning.
This product comes in an easy to carry box made from unbleached recycled cardboard.
Another Great Find!

Kind of cool for a small space. The grill that doubles as a pot holder is ingenious. Although, I still think a small webber is the way to go for a quality grill that fits in a small space.
I'm not even in the market for a new grill, but your persuasive writing kept leading me to read more! Great wording. I like the concept of a small patio grill that doubles as a planter, but I just don't see it working out in the long run for plants. Just too small of a root space, plus container plants need drainage to grow and the Black + Blum grill is water tight. In my opinion, it's just trying to be too clever. Great article though! Thanks for sharing.
@RTalloni& Paul Edmondson - Thanks you so much for your comments. It really is a pretty cool product.
Joe Macho I see what you mean about the water tight top compartment. Plants do need drainage, and the top could be used as the drainage container, while the plant sits in its own planter.
Thanks for your comments and for
This is amazing. We don't live in an apartment but don't want to set up a full barbecue out on the patio. Disguising it as a planter is perfect. Voting this Up and Useful.
Simply amazing! I MUST try one of these! I love that it looks like a planter!
Amazing! Love the planter-in-disguise! Nice hub!
@alocsin and LTaylor99 - I couldn't agree with you more. It's an amazing product. Very well disguised too.
Thanks for your comments.

What a neat idea--love the fact that herbs can be planted in the top of the unit hiding the handy grill underneath.
