How To Decorate Large Wall Space

Updated on November 8, 2014
Maybe just a little too crowded.
Maybe just a little too crowded.

Decorating large wall space can be somewhat of a challenge when it comes to what type of décor to use and determining the placement of such décor. As much as you do not want to leave the wall bare with scanty décor, you also don’t want to overdo the décor as wall may become too crowded and less appealing.

In making a recent wall décor decision, I was faced with choosing among so many options. It wasn't easy, but with the help of my teens we settled for a combination of two of the followings:

Decorate With Wall & Picture Frames

Frames are very common options for decoration large wall space. You can distribute the frames evenly to give a symmetrical look across your room. You can also choose to spread them out unevenly, using frames of different sizes in no particular order. If you’re trying to fill the wall space behind your sofa, or on top of your fireplace, here are a few hints to help you along:

  • Use over-sized wall art frames that spans across the length of your sofa to create that focal point in your room.
  • Use small to medium size frames to create a collage layout, spanning the space no larger than your sofa.
  • Use large or oversized frames for the space above the fireplace/mantel, one oversize picture frame usually does the trick. Small to medium frames can be arranged in collage layouts.

Decorate With Wall Murals or Giant Wall Graphics

Wall murals can be a very practical way to decorate your wall either permanently or temporarily. Using a wall mural or giant wall graphics to decorate a very large wall space helps to take the guesswork out of trying to figure out what goes where.

Permanent murals can sometimes be expensive and difficult to change. You should therefore, proceed with caution. Temporary ones on the other hand, are easy to change and can be moved, re-used, or relocated to other parts of the house.

Decorate With Wall Shelves

When making my décor decision for my living room, one of the things my daughter suggested was that we have vases on shelves. She wanted a three-dimensional look, I wanted the frames, so we came to a compromise and used both frames and shelves.

So If you’re looking to add three dimensional décor style to your wall, then you may consider using shelves. These can be regular shelves or cube shelves. They come in different sizes and colors.

Placing different size shelves layered or in overlapping fashion, will allow you to place different décor accents, frames, and flower vases on your wall. This is a great way to fill up an overly large wall space while getting the 3D look. There are also 3D Word Cut-Outs that can be used to decorate your walls. They come in both contemporary and religious themes.

Decorate With 3D Or Vinyll Word Wall Art

Another great economical way to decorate large wall space is to use Word Wall Arts. These are fast becoming one of the most popular ways to decorate the homes, and especially large wall spaces.

Word Wall Arts are usually made out of self-adhesive removable vinyl that allows you to have your favorite quotes displayed on your wall. They are easy to apply and can also be reused.

Word Wall Arts can be used alone or in combination with other wall décor, such as those mentioned above. The word art can be centered on the side of the wall in question, or to either side of it.

In the category of word wall arts are carved, 3D wooden or metal word arts that can be placed above the fireplace mantel or on mounted wall shelves. These are also great for decorating large wall space.

Decorate With Shadow Boxes

Shadow boxes are a great option for decorating walls, especially if you will be displaying quite a few vases. They can be redesigned to incorporate your taste of décor accents. Use them to display medals, trophies, collector items, things of sentimental values, and even flowers.

I came across a picture (seen on the right) of two shadow boxes, redesigned to display flowers. For those with the love for nature, the possibilities are endless. Think leaves, think shells, or whatever it is that makes you feel right at home can be displayed in shadow boxes.

Shadow boxes are a great way to display your kids trophies or your priced collections of stamps, rocks etc. They can also be used in combination with any of the other options mentioned here.
