Helpful Gifts For A New Neighbor In Your Neighborhood

Here on Hub pages, new hubers sometimes feel lost navigating their way around. It is hard not knowing the norms and how things are done. But thanks to a lot of hub elites like (J. S. Matthew) who take the time to show these new hubers the way around hub pages, making their debut on hub pages a lot less stressful.

Well, the experience of joining hubpages is somewhat similar to that of someone moving into a new neighborhood for the first time. They don't quite know their way around and may sometimes need a little help getting familiar with the environment. That's why I felt the need to put this hub out there for those who may find it useful in addressing what to do and how to welcome a neighbor into their neighborhood.

So what can you do to welcome your new neighbors to your neighborhood? Well, here are a few tips to help you:

Neighborhood maps usually showcases all of the neighborhood's groceries and department stores, restaurants, schools, city hall and other main attractions. So a neighborhood map is a great gift that will help a new neighbor to quickly get acquainted and situated.

You can also give your new neighbor that extra copy of the yellow pages that you have sitting around in your living room or kitchen counter. These too are a great way to quickly find needed help for those unfortunate plumbing and electrical emergencies that often creeps up in new or old homes.

So put a package together that includes a neighborhood map, a copy of the surrounding area yellow pages, and, don't forget to include a list of your phone number and that of some of your other neighbors.

Giving a food basket is a great way to say 'Welcome to the neighborhood' to your new neighbors. Be sure to include baked good, such as, cookies, muffins, bread, and/or bagels. You can also add coffee and/or tea, sugar, and cream. This will help ease the initial worry of "what are we going to have for breakfast?' or "where are we going to have breakfast?" after an exhausting day(s) of driving or moving into their new home.

If your neighbors have kids, it will help if you can include those one serving boxes of cereals and a fresh gallon of milk and orange juice.

Believe it or not, your neighbor might actually need your help when it comes to moving stuff into and around the house, especially if they are elderly or single moms. So be sure to ask if they need your help. Most will be glad you asked and may actually take you up on it.

When we moved into out neighborhood a long time ago. One of my neighbors brought baked goods which I appreciated. But the one neighbor that left the most impression on my family was one that is now a very good friend of ours. He offered to help mow our lawn.

You see, we moved in from New York (no lawn to mow, so no lawn mower) to Georgia, with a front and back yard of overgrown lawn. Mow my lawn?, That was one gift I couldn't turn down, and that was really appreciated. So when we gave out our new riding mower after my husband decided to contract the mowing job out to a professional, guess who got the riding mower? Yes, you guessed right, our dear neighbor and friend. 'One good turn deserves another'.

Yes, you can offer to give your new neighbor a tour of the neighborhood. It's really not uncommon to have one offer a new neighbor a tour of the neighborhood, and it's usually a welcomed gesture.Though this is widely practiced among college dorm mates/ neighbor, it can also be extended to anyone, say, a neighbor moving in from out of states or from another country.

For these types of neighbor, driving around becomes a totally different experience. Having a neighbor who is familiar with the neighborhood, driving and traffic rules will go a long way to help them transition easily.

It may sound strange, but I know this from experience that some new neighbors do not like to be bothered. My husband is usually the one that is forthcoming when it comes to welcoming new neighbors. I'm the shy one.

Over the course of the twelve years we've live in our house, we've seen neighbors come and go as we live next to an Air Force Base. We've had great neighbors, some very dear to our heart, and we've also seen some come and go. And sadly, we've had on occasion, neighbors who did not want to be bothered. So, usually, after several attempts of trying to be neighborly, we'll retract and stay away from such.

It's a small world out there. And we all know that what goes around, comes around. The story of 'The Good Samaritan' teaches us that it is good to always reach out and be a friend. So whether you buy a gift, offer a tour, or give a helping hand to a new neighbor, you will be doing a neighborly deed that will one day reap its own benefits.
