Back Down Memory Lane

Have you ever found yourself suddenly humming songs that you remember from when you were a kid? I have.

Growing up as a child, my dad will sometimes come back from his trips to the USA and London bringing back these circle-shaped plastic-type THING (at least that's what I thought it was back then). Those plastic thing were records. We had this humongous turntable, which was about half the size of a piano player, on which these records will be played.

For every trip my dad makes, he'll bring home about half a dozen new records. I remember being so excited every time I watched him break open some of the records of such artists like Mariam Makeba, Bonny M., Abba, Bob Marley, James Brown, Jimmy Cliff, and Minnie Riperton to mention a few. I love listening to the records of these artists.

Back Down Memory Lane by Minnie Riperton

Have You Ever Seen The Rain?

Lately I found myself breaking into some of the songs that I heard from way back then in the 60's and 70's. The Lyrics to some of these songs I can hardly remember. So I went searching. And boy, I found some of them on U tube!

I couldn't believe how just listening to these songs on U tube brought back some of those good times feeling. If you lived in that era you probably have an idea what I mean.

These are songs that some of you out there probably lived through too. And hearing it again may just bring back those good times feeling. So I thought I might just share these with you. Enjoy!

Abba - Dancing Queen

  • Abba - Dancing Queen
  • Bonny M. - Have You Ever Seen The Rain
  • Bonny M. - By the Rivers of Babylon
  • Sheena Easton - My Baby Takes The Morning Train
  • Jim Reeves - We Thank Thee
  • Jim Reeves - I'll Fly Away
  • Jim Reeves - How Long Has It Been?
  • Jim Reeves - Take My Hand Precious Lord.
  • Cristy Lane - One Day At A Time

Songs have always appealed to me more than words have. I came to know the Lord and gave my life to Jesus after hearing a rendition of "I'd Rather Have Jesus", (chorus below).

I'd rather live in heaven, than to own all earth's silver and gold.
I'd rather have Jesus, than a palace of a diamond to own.
I'd rather be a beggar, live in a little shack by the road.
Than to own all earth's treasure, with no title to a future abode.

And my favorite one of them all! We Thank Thee by Jim Reeves. I came to appreciate the little things in life as a child as a result of listening to this song.

Jim Reeve's, We thank Thee was one of my introduction to the truth that God created and rules the universe. I thank God for this song. It caused me to want to discover more and more of the beauty of the world around me every time I hear it. And I thank God everyday for giving me my senses to enable me to do so. You should too.

We all need to look around us and take a moment to appreciate all the wonders of life that the good Lord has blessed us with. It doesn't matter where you live. Whether in some little town, in a suburb, in a little house on a praire with a pond or stream that flows by, or in a busy city or town, God's blessings are numerous.

The very fact that you are alive and breathing today, with eyes or senses to read this hub is enough reason to thank God Almighty. And this song from Jim Reeves says it all.

One Day At A Time

And then there are those songs that helps us to see that we are only human, and that we are at our best, only, and only when we sole rely and trust in the grace and strength of our Maker. Songs like How Long Has It Been? by Jim Reeves, and One Day At A Time, by Cristy Lane.

These songs tells us it's not in of our self that we are are able to do what we do, but that through the power of God in heaven, through prayer we are over comers and conquerors, and are sustained from day to day.

We think we can control everything around us. We think we can do it all, and then we break down and feel defeated. But as soon as we realize that it's not about us, but about Him and take it one day at a time, trusting in God along the way, then everything falls back in place.

So take a little ride back down memory lane, good or bad, You were not defeated. You were not cast down. There's still hope for a better tomorrow, and a more joyful day.

Enjoyed reading this and thanks for the memories! I like that you added the utube songs so I can listen to them. I do thank God daily and still will never get Him thanked enough for all He has done and continues to do for me. God bless

I'm only 21 years old and the first time I heard Minnie Riperton's voice was just a few weeks ago. That song was actually Back Down Memory Lane, and I fell in love with it. I also fell in love with her voice...
